Louis van Gaal admits transfer saga surrounding David De Gea isn’t a favourable situation

De Gea has left Van Gaal with a goalkeeping dilemma after he endured a nightmare first half in United’s 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain here.

Real target De Gea looked like he was dreaming of a move to the Bernabeu as he starting sloppily by making an early error and was then at fault for PSG’s first goal before being replaced at half-time.

Van Gaal refused to condemn De Gea for the goal but suggested he could be distracted by a transfer saga that has dragged on all summer.

“Poor I cannot say but he made a mistake,” he said. “That’s not poor. Everybody can makes mistakes but when a goalkeeper makes a mistake it is usually ends in a goal and that’s the difference.

“We have a situation that is not favourable for David De Gea but neither for us, or the club. Maybe he wants to go.”

Van Gaal also claimed, bizarrely, he didn’t know the whereabouts of another wantaway player, Angel Di Maria, who is wanted by PSG.

He added: “Maybe you know. We don’t know.”

PSG boss Laurent Blanc: “You know negotiations are in tandem [ongoing] and as Paris St Germain are both big clubs, that can be difficult. But we feel we are close to the end.”

Van Gaal was satisfied by United’s performance despite their first defeat in four tour games.

He said: “I’m really satisfied about the performance. “You lose, maybe that’s also good, but last year we have won everything and then we lost the first match.

“Maybe now the sequence is a bit different but I’m not superstitious.

“I think in the first half we have created more chances than PSG and they have created nearly chances with personal errors and you cannot fight against personal errors.

“When you’re playing against top level teams, and PSG are top level, then they can score out of these kinds of errors and they can finish the game.

“But I’ve also seen a lot of things good from my team, so it’s more the performance than the result.

“I was rather satisfied. It’s better when you win. After Barca the score could have been 0-2 to them and then we scored the first goal.

“Against top clubs whoever scores the first goal has great possibilities to win the game.”
