Beachgoers paid their respects to Aylan Kurdi yesterday

They re-enacted the horrific photo of the three-year-old Syrian boy, who was found dead on a Turkish beach last week.

He drowned with his mother Rehan and five-year-old brother Galip after paying cruel people traffickers thousands to cross from Turkey to Greece by boat.

The young family had fled their home town of Kobane after twisted Islamic State fighters besieged the city.

Around 30 people lay face-down on a beach in Rabat, Morocco yesterday to re-create the harrowing scene – which triggered an international outcry over the refugee crisis.

Some wore the same combination of clothes – a red shirt and blue trousers – and stayed in the position for around 20 minutes.

Moroccan actress Latifa Ahrar, who helped organise the event, said: "As an artist, my duty is to react and to come here with my colleagues to say that a small gesture can be worth a lot."

Journalist Rachid el-Belghiti said: "We are here to say that the Mediterranean should remain a space for sharing and exchanges, not a barrier for those who are victims of dictatorships, civil wars and terrorism."

At the other end of the Mediterranean, Palestinians built a sand sculpture of the image on a beach in the Gaza Strip.

The sculpture is located a short distance from where four children died while paying football during last year's 50-day Gaza war.

Resident Arwa Arbijan said: "When I saw this statue representing Aylan Kurdi, the child drowned while fleeing Syria, I felt a deep sadness and great emotion.

"It reminded me of the children of the Bakr family who were killed on the Gaza beach during the last war."

The tribute came after David Cameron announced plans to let 20,000 Syrian refugees into Britain over the next five years.

Yesterday he hailed Britain as "a country of extraordinary compassion" during a speech in the House of Commons.

The Prime Minister said the new refugees will be offered five-year humanitarian visas and the cost of their first year in Britain will be met from the Government's aid budget.

He had previously been opposed to accepting more people, saying the move would simply encourage more people to risk the hazardous sea crossing to Europe.

But he was forced to make a dramatic U-turn after the photo of tragic Aylan appeared to galvanise public opinion.

On Sunday the police officer who discovered Aylan's body revealed he was "crushed deep down" when he realised the boy was dead.

Mehmet Ciplak said he had no idea a photographer was taking the image, and was just praying the little boy was still alive as he scooped him up.

Speaking for the first time about the tragedy, he said: "When I saw the baby on the beach, I approached the baby and said to myself, 'Dear God, I hope he's alive'.

"When I found out he was dead, I was crushed deep down inside. It was a terrible sight, it was a terrible loss."
